Until now live-cell imaging has been difficult, because it required large costly high-end devices that are difficult to operate. The CytoSMART Lux 2 provides a small, easy and affordable solution for live-cell imaging. The CytoSMART Lux 2 is a compact inverted microscope for bright-field live cell imaging that makes live-cell imaging easy and affordable so it can be used by every biological laboratory. Even in routine cell culture processes.

No issues with environmental controls

Tight control of the environment (e.g. temperature, CO2) is one of the most critical factors determining the success or failure of a live-cell imaging experiment. Using a conventional microscope with a stage-top incubator it can be quite a challenge to maintain the cells in a healthy state and functioning normally for a longer period of time while being imaged. The CytoSMART Lux 2 operates at low-voltage and is designed for safe use in a regular CO2 incubator.

Easy data storage and image analysis

The CytoSMART Lux2 can be set to record images at specific intervals for minutes, hours and days. In fact it is one of the few systems that can run for weeks. The recorded images are send to the CytoSMART Connect Cloud where image analysis software analysis the proliferation by analyzing the occupied area (% confluence) of cell images over time. The image analysis data is graphically represented in a dashboard. Alerts can be set for confluency, meaning you will receive an automatic notification once your cell culture has reached a certain confluency and is ready for splitting or experiments, such as transfection.

How it works. Simple as 1-2-3

1. Place the CytoSMART™ Lux 2 microscope device in the incubator. The combined power and data cable can be run either through a port in the back of the incubator or along the rubber sealing of the door. 

2. Connect the tablet to the device and the power cable to a power outlet.

3. Start the tablet. You’re set to go. You can now start recording a time-lapse of a cell culture.​​

The CytoSMART LUX2 is a functional mini microscope that is designed to be placed inside an incubator to monitor cell cultures. Images are analyzed almost real time using image analysis software to provide insights into the cell confluency.

The dimensions of the mini microscope are 133mm (L) x 90 mm (W) x 100 mm (H) and weighs 0.5 kg. This corresponds to 5,2” (L) x 3,5” (W) x 3.9” (H) and a weight of 1.1 pound.
The included tablet is 25,7-cm (10,1-inch) which is 264 (L) x 173 (W) x 10 (H) mm and weighs 1.1 kg. This corresponds to 10.4” (L) x 6.8” (W) x 0.4” (H) and a weight of 2.2 pound.

The CytoSMART LUX2 is a brightfield only microscope. It has no filters for fluorescent dye detection.

The device is easy to clean using lint-free swipes and EtOH (80%) or IPA. Do not use Acetone to clean the device, also the device cannot be autoclaved.

No calibration by the user is needed for the device to operate.

After sterilizing with EtOH or IPA the device can be used in a cleanroom.

he device can be used with a Windows based tablet or PC. A Windows based tablet with all necessary software installed can be also purchased at CytoSMART. A WiFi or WLAN internet connection is required to be able to connect to the CytoSMART server for data storage and analysis.

The CytoSMART LUX2 allows monitoring of a wide range of different culture dishes and flasks, such as:
