In this study, the authors show that fully functional atrial myocytes can be produced and expanded by means of a conditional cell-immortalization approach that relies on lentiviral vectors and the expression of a viral oncogene in human fetal atrial myocytes. The Exact (Corning Cell Counter) was used to assess the proliferation rates of human immortalized atrial myocytes (hiAMs). All in all, this study provides proof-of-concept of a new method to generate considerable numbers of human cells for the creation of representative human in vitro models.
