Here, the authors of the study aimed to study the effects of the hydroxyl-containing benzo[b]thiophene analogs, 1-(3- hydroxybenzo[b]thiophen-2-yl) ethanone (BP) and 1-(3-hydroxybenzo[b]thiophen-2-yl) propan-1-one hydrate (EP) on proliferation of cancer cells. The Axion Lux3 FL (formerly known as the CytoSMART Lux3 FL) was used to analyze the generation of intracellular reactive oxygen species (ROS), as well as to assess the apoptotic changes in the HEp2 cells following treatments with BP and EP. All in all, it was confirmed that BP and EP have an antiproliferative effect against selected cancer cell lines. Even though the effect is rather modest, the combination of these drugs with other agents would represent a promising therapeutic approach.
