The authors of this study aimed to combine Melt electrowriting (MEW) and inkjet bioprinting into a sequential bio fabrication framework. Following, they ink-jetted a defined number of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) into box-like MEW scaffolds. The scaffolds induced spontaneous cellular aggregation within each microwell. The CytoSMART Lux2 was used to image the self-assembly of spheroids inside the MEW scaffolds. It was demonstrated that combining MEW and inkjet bioprinting results in the maturation into stratified cartilage tissue, which originates from sheet-like tissue constructs composed of multicellular spheroids
